Ohio/California/Africa Original circa 1940s Stone Lithograph signed within the print, in modern vintage frame. (not hand-signed) Embossed stamp at lower left appears to be a stylized “OK”. We have seen this stamp on other California artist’s work but have not identified it. Note: We have matched the signature within this print to his signature/handwriting in the 1940s. His 1950s signature became more expressive and looks different but still has a larger R like this. The frame and linen mat appear to be from the 1950s to 1970s. The partial gallery label on the back from Philadelphia looks like it predates the 1950s, but could have still been in use. The print appears to be in good condition although there are a few stains and marks, mostly at the upper left, as shown. The frame is 24-1/2″ x 20-1/4″ and the visible image area of the print is about 14″ x 10-1/2″. Little is known about the artist, but he was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright and has works in the Cleveland Museum of Art and Howard University Gallery collections. In the 1950s he had exhibitions in Indonesia and Africa of work that was done while travelling there. We found an article about his daughter Mimi, in “The Nation” and below is an excerpt that discusses her parents. Mimi Wolford is founder of the Mbari Institute for Contemporary African Art, Washington DC, United States. Both parents, Richard Wolford and Jean Kennedy, were involved in the world of art from an early age, having graduated from the Cleveland School of Art. They both apprenticed with renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright and went on to build their own Wright-inspired house in southern California. It is now a historic location in Highland Park, Los Angeles. After working in Los Angeles for four years, Richard joined the U. Following his foreign service in Italy and Indonesia, he was assigned to Ethiopia for eighteen months. Then, in 1961, Richard was transferred to Nigeria where the Wolford family lived for seven years. Living in Lagos, the Wolfords became deeply involved with the artists of the country, opening their home every Thursday afternoon to exhibit the works of Oshogbo artists…

Biography from artnet: Richard Haas is a practitioner of the trompe l’oeil artistic style, a technique that uses realistic images in a way that tricks the eye into perceiving the painting in three dimensions. Haas has painted hundreds of murals that incorporate trompe l’oeil methods in the depiction of the architectural features of the building. He was born in Spring Greene but grew up in Milwaukee, WI. He graduated in 1959 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a Bachelor in Art. He spent several years as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan before he moved to New York City in 1968. Haas spent 10 years teaching at Vermont’s Bennington College, splitting his time between the school and New York. Haas worked for many years as an Abstract painter who used traditional canvas media. He later developed an interest in drawing and etching the details of late 19th century and early 20th century New York City buildings. The artist’s first outdoor mural, a commission to paint the cast iron façade at the corner of Prince Street and Greene Street, was completed in 1975. His other notable murals include Fort Worth, Texas’ Homage to Chisholm Trail, Gateway to the Waterfront in Yonkers, and Michigan’s The Dwelling Place. Haas’s awards include the 1983 Guggenheim Fellowship, the 2003 Westchester Arts Council Artist Award, and the 2005 Jimmy Ernst Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Hass’s murals were the subject of the 1989 documentary film Painting the Town: The Illusionistic Murals of Richard Haas. He wrote The City is My Canvas and Richard Haas: An Architecture of Illusion. Many famed museums hold examples of Hass’s work in their collections, including Washington, D. S Smithsonian Institution, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and Massachusetts’s Boston Museum of Fine Art. Haas still lives in New York City, but he often travels to paint commissioned murals. Fallingwater Frank Lloyd Wright A limited edition fine art print by artist JC Richard. Limited Edition of 200. This print was created for the 2024 “Timeless” exhibition presented by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The Exhibition was a traveling pop-up art exhibition featuring limited edition prints inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. The show featured work from over a dozen international artists, with pieces designed in the style of 1930s-era Works Progress Administration (WPA) travel posters. Frank Lloyd Wright: Timeless has toured to Taliesin West (Scottsdale, AZ), Hashimoto Contemporary (New York City) and Taliesin (Spring Green, WI). A portion of proceeds from the exhibition directly benefited the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Mint condition; stored flat in an archival sleeve.
