Additional Information Located in the Laurel Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water residence remains one of the most iconic pieces of American Architecture and a true masterpiece by one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century. The home is constructed partially above a waterfall on Bear Run and was designed as a weekend retreat for Lilianae and Edgar J. Kaufmann, who was a prominent department store owner in Pittsburgh. In 1991, Falling Water was designated the “best all-time work of American architecture” by the American Institute of Architects. Falling Water’s integration of nature and design has been one of the most prominent reasons for its considerable popularity and fame. Wright also designed original furnishings for the residence, which remain in the home. The floors feature waxed stone while the hearth remains unfinished to give the impression of both wet and dry stone to integrate the waterfall which runs underneath Falling Water. Wright had an incredibly prolific career that spanned over seven decades, during which he designed more than one thousand structures. In addition to private residences, Wright was an influential designer and created original and innovative offices, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels, museums, and other commercial projects, as well as other interior items. Captured here in the year of its completion, which took over three years, this photograph captures the dramatic scope of this visionary building. Falling Water remains one of the most iconic spaces in the world and represents the peak of American mid-century design and architecture.
