This beautiful sculpture is made of polyresin, individually hand painted and polished. She measures 18.25″ tall, 5.25″ long and 5.25 deep approximately. Flower in the Crannied Wall was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Bock for placement in the entrance alcove of the 1902 Susan Lawrence Dana House in Springfield, Illinois. While Wright knew he wanted a sculpture in this location, he was uncertain about just what he wanted. The final design, executed by Bock in terra cotta, combined ideas from both architect and sculptor and resulted in a naturalistic rendering of a female nude rising from a geometrically abstract column. Named after the Alfred Lord Tennyson poem, which is also shown on the back, the sculpture symbolically represents the human attempt to understand nature and the universe. Midway Gardens (1914) was an indoor-outdoor entertainment complex on Chicago’s south side and an extraordinary achievement for Frank Lloyd Wright. The complex was ornamented with concrete panels, hand-painted wall murals, lighting and tableware all designed by Wright. Working in collaboration with sculptor Alfonso Iannelli, a group of various concrete figures, male and female, were sculpted and stood atop the building’s street facades. They were gracefully positioned in the interior spaces and gardens contained within the structure. These abstractions of the human form entertain the eye and seem at times to reflect the Art Nouveau and Cubism movements of the early twentieth century. On piers flanking the entry to his 1898 architectural studio in Oak Park, Illinois, Frank Lloyd Wright envisioned two sculptures of a solid, crouching figure of a man. Turned to sculptor Richard Bock, with whom he frequently collaborated. Wright and Bock felt the sculpture symbolized the struggle of the oppressed and shackled. Cast in plaster and tinted to resemble red granite, the original sculptures disintegrated over the years and were recreated by the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and.
