Surprisingly, the least interesting thing about H. Shozo studied British and American luxury service for seven years before he took over as manager of his father’s famed Fujiya hotel in 1907, a pioneer in blending Japanese hospitality and Western travel expectations. He was also responsible for opening the Hakone Hotel and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. Amongst it all he co-authored We, Japanese (1934) with the answers to guests most common questions about traditional culture and was a founder of the Fujiya Motorcar Company. The Great Kanto earthquake and impending Second World War plagued his late career and his death is not well recorded. This perhaps explains how such a large life leaves so little evidence behind. Nothing shows in archives. Measures 2 x 3 w/ flea bit chips to emulsion edges and thumb crease bottom left.

Product Description After the era of the so-called masters of modern architecture, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe, came to an end. The master who came is a book that collects Louis Kahn’s residential works. Speaking of Khan’s representative works, the names of relatively large buildings such as the Kimbell Art Museum and the Salk Institute will come to mind, but the houses that Khan built diligently are as attractive as those. Masterpieces such as the Kimbell Art Museum are undoubtedly important, but you can’t talk about the architect Kahn without mentioning, for example, the Fisher House or the Escherik House. Until now, however, there has not been sufficient Japanese material on Kahn’s housing works. It is true that many books on Khan tended to be unbalanced, with at most only a small drawing and a few photographs of his housework. This is a book that solves these imbalances at once. In order to get close to Khan’s house, it is absolutely necessary to take time to decipher it, especially referring to the drawings. Its close proportions, the thoughtfully crafted space, and the combination of materials that have not lost their freshness over the years all have a depth that cannot be grasped just by looking at them superficially. Various drawings are carefully interleaved with beautiful photographs that show the richness of the four seasons. As you turn each page, you will be amazed at the overwhelming density of Kahn’s architecture. At the same time, we cannot help but be amazed that the 20 houses in Caen that were built nearly 50 years ago have been carefully maintained and still look beautiful today. There is certainly an architectural figure that is loved. Many architects’ houses have been tossed about by history or embroiled in trouble, and it is not uncommon to see a disappointing appearance. But the condition of the Kahn homes assembled here is astonishing. Fischer’s words, looking back on the time of construction, speak eloquently of something that should be called the happiness of architecture. Khan could give it and they could enjoy it. And in this book, the reader should be able to touch a glimpse of it. (Naohiko Hino) Contents (from “BOOK” database) 30 years after his death, the origin of Louis Kahn, the charismatic architect.
