Motawi Tileworks Frank Lloyd Wright Design for Coonley Playhouse 8 x 8

Motawi Tileworks – Coonley Playhouse Tile. Based on one of several windows Frank Lloyd Wright designed for the. Avery Coonley Playhouse in Riverside, Illinois. The Playhouse was a used as a kindergarten and the windows suggest balloons, confetti and flags. Like most Motawi 8×8 tiles, the tile is closer to 7 3/4″ x 7 3/4″. Unused like-new condition, the tile has been marked as a “second”. Still lovely, I believe it was marked as a second due to a some slight glaze bleed around the green squares. There is also a small black dot in two of the corners and some glaze thinness in spots.

Amazing Frank Lloyd Wright Frozen Spheres tile by Motawi Tileworks, framed in an ebony stained oak frame. Great pre-owned condition with just a little bit of wear on the back edge of frame as seen in photos. In 1927, Frank Lloyd Wright designed a series of twelve seasonally themed monthly covers for Liberty magazine. Frozen Spheres is based on one of these covers. Motawi Tileworks is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan where they design and make all of their ceramic tiles by hand. They can be hung on the wall, displayed on a stand, or used as the focal point in your next tile project. Tile size: 7 13/16 square. Size with frame: 11 1/2 square. Tiles are 5/8 thick and have a notch at the back for hanging. The solid wood frames are built by Family Woodworks in Pennsylvania with premium 2-inch flat quartersawn white oak wood and finished using their 4 step signature process. Frames are stained, not painted.

In 1927, Wright designed a series of 12 monthly covers for Liberty magazine based on seasonal themes. Unfortunately, the publishers judged them as too radical for the time. Each cover design exemplifies Wright’s practice of using the tools of his trade-T-square, triangle, and compass-to create lively geometric designs. Nearly a century later, Motawi celebrates this study in geometry, asymmetry, and color with its 8×8 ceramic art tile inspired by Wright’s Jewelry Shop Window design. This lively composition-a stylized arrangement of necklaces and other adornments-evokes the sparkle of gemstones and pearls through bold linework and intricate detail.
