Frank Lloyd Wright [as Architect/Designer]. ORIGINAL ROOF TILE for First Unitarian Meeting House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. An Original Roof tile for the The First Unitarian Society of Madison meeting place for the Unitarian Universalist meeting house located in Shorewood Hills, Wisconsin designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (under a commission he accepted in 1946) and built by Marshall Erdman in 19491951. The building was first put into use in 1951 and has been designated a U. National Historic Landmark for its architecture. The roof of the original meeting house was covered by interlocking copper tiles as specified by Wright. Such tiles are made green on the portion visible once properly installed by application of coloring thereto. Of the original roof, one congretant stated : The copper roof over our Landmark Auditorium, with its soaring lines reaching toward the heavens, has inspired and attracted members of First Unitarian Society for over half a century. Let us now recommit ourselves to Wright the Roof so that it may inspire future generations. ” Due to deterioration, it became necessary to make repairs to the building, with such repairs beginning in the 1980s, the church having stated: “A celebrated aesthetic feature of Frank Lloyd Wrights original Meeting House design, the roof must be replaced and further supported structurally, in the near future to prevent further damage to the interior of the Meeting House. The subject of extensive community conversation, the roof project will utilize a new generation of materials and should remain viable for decades. This Original Roof tile was one of those supplied for the original construction of the meeting house and was rescued by of of the congregants.
