Offered is an original typed note on Taliesin West stationery, personally signed by Frank Lloyd Wright in black ink and dated December 31, 1956. The note is addressed to Leighton Rollins, noted theater producer, educator, and Santa Barbara arts leader who was active with The Experiment in International Living. Rollins was a well-known figure in California’s cultural community and maintained friendships with many leading artists, architects, and intellectuals of the period. The message reads in part. Dear Leighton: Easier on me to go to hotel. Wright then adds an especially significant postscript. Will send drawing of the Mile High to the Museum. This reference is particularly noteworthy, as it almost certainly concerns Wright’s legendary Mile High Illinois skyscraper proposal, one of the most ambitious architectural concepts of the twentieth century. Introduced in 1956, the design has become one of the architect’s most recognizable unbuilt projects.
