Frank Lloyd Wright “Tree of Life” Window. Painted Glass Reproduction with Display Stand and Hanging Hooks. A beautiful miniature reproduction of Wright’s most famous and beloved stained glass design. The “Tree of Life” windows designed for the Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, New York (1903-05) are perhaps the best-known motifs in all of Wright’s work. Darwin Martin, a Larkin Soap Company executive, commissioned Wright to design his home in 1902. Wright reduced the tree to its most elemental geometric form – a square for the roots, simple straight lines for the trunk, and chevrons for the branches. Leaves are indicated by pieces of gold, red, and green glass. Over 700 pieces of mostly clear glass were used in each original window, with each piece set at a slightly different angle to enhance light reflection – creating what Wright described as like the shimmer of leaves waving in the breeze. The Martin House contained 394 pieces of art glass across sixteen distinct patterns, all made by Linden Glass Company in Chicago. The house is considered one of the most important projects from Wright’s Prairie School era and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Original Tree of Life windows are now in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Corning Museum of Glass, Princeton University Art Museum, and others. This painted glass panel features enamel colors kiln-fired onto glass, reproducing the subtle earth tones and geometric precision of Wright’s original design. Metal frame with dark wood display stand. Includes hanging hooks for wall display. This is a larger rectangular format (9.5″ x 11.5″) – different from the currently available 10 square version.
