The buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright are not immune to the social and environmental forces that affect all architecture. Because of the popular recognition and historical significance of his work, however, the stakes are unusually high when his buildings are modified in any way. Any additions or changes must meet the highest standards; how exactly this can be achieved is the debate that fuels this compelling new book. The essays collected here are authored by many of the top professionals in the fields of architecture and preservation. Some of the contributors worked directly on the buildings discussed and provide invaluable firsthand accounts of these projects. This is the most thorough discussion of modifying Wright’s works published to date and a fascinating commentary on preserving our architectural legacy. Contributors:Richard Longstreth on additions to historic buildings, de Teel Patterson Tiller on design in historic districts, Sidney K. Robinson on Taliesin, Anne Biebel and Mary Keiran Murphy on the Hillside School, Mark Hertzberg on the S. Johnson Administration Building, Dale Allen Gyure on Florida Southern College, Neil Levine on the Guggenheim Museum, Scott W. Perkins on the Price Tower, Tom Kubala on the First Unitarian Meeting House, Eric Jackson-Forsberg on the Darwin Martin House, Lynda S. Waggoner on Fallingwater, Patrick J. Mahoney on Graycliff, Thomas Templeton Taylor on the Westcott House. Richard Longstreth is Professor of American Studies and Director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at George Washington University, USA. This book is composed of a series of fascinating case studies related to the relationship of old and new design within the context of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. As time passes buildings inevitably face new challenges and expectations. How do we meet these needs, while respecting and preserving the essential character of place? Given their insight and scope, these essays should be of central interest, not just to students of Wright, but to anyone involved in the rehabilitation and expanded reuse of important historic structures. -Kenneth Breisch, University of Southern California Additions to buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright threaten their integrity, yet such changes are often necessary to support ongoing uses that keep those buildings alive. To my knowledge, there has never been a major publication addressing this issue, as it relates specifically to Wright, until this book. De Long, University of Pennsylvania, author of Auldbrass: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Southern Plantation. Contributors: Richard Longstreth on additions to historic buildings. To see 150+ more house plans in a variety of styles. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Price Tower, 1953-56. You are purchasing the architectural drawings only. The color photo is NOT included in this package. Frank Lloyd Wright proposed several highly original and experimental skyscraper designs. But only 2 were ever built. The Price Tower, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, is one of those. The design skillfully mixes office and residential units, with some suites having double height spaces. Commissioned by Harold Price as corporate offices for the H. Price Company, it has recently undergone extensive restoration, returning it closely to its original form. This drawing set is a treasure trove for anybody interested in Wright’s later style. The plan is based on a grid of equilateral triangles, which yields a highly complex and fluid sense of space. As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent into Wright’s spatial planning. While most of his designs were based on a square or rectangular grid, in his later years he explored the possibilities of the triangular or honeycomb grid as an ordering device. These drawings offer detailed plans showing how skillfully he combined the requirements of daily living with the unusual geometry of the triangle. Building name: Price Tower. Designer/Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright. Date of construction: 1956. Number of sheets: 17 sheets measuring 24″ x 36″. 7 sheets, Plans, 1/8″=1′-0″. 6 sheets, Elevation, 1/8″=1′-0″. 2 sheets, Section and Details, various scales. The prints you are purchasing are crisp, high resolution black line copies on white bond paper. The original drawings were beautifully delineated in 2009, by the Historic American Building Survey. IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD: These plans are NOT complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL Frank Lloyd Wright Style home, not a pseudo-Wright tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
