FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT RARE. JOHN GILLIN HOUSE – DALLAS, TEXAS. This bound set of 109 drawings and sketches are of the Gillin House in Dallas, Texas designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built over a period of three years in 1956 through 1958. The Gillin House is one of the last houses designed and completed by Mr. Wright during his lifetime. Many of the drawings are from the final construction set and many are copies of sketches either by Mr. Wright or one of his draftsmen and showing his design corrections and notes to the draftsmen. Gillin was his own General Contractor, hiring two experienced construction managers and assisted by an apprentice from the Taliesin Fellowship. Gillin was a physicist and specialized in geophysical exploration both in the USA and the Gulf of Mexico. He outfitted all of his exploration equipment and vehicles from his plant in Dallas and fabricated much of the hardware and kitchen equipment used in the house. Gillin was very involved in all aspects of the house design which accounts for the unusual amount of drawings that were created over the span of design and construction. The original drawings and sketches for this and other Frank Lloyd Wright structures now reside with the Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library at Columbia University and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
