But critics often scorned his concept of “organic” or “prairie” architecture because of its utter contrast to the prevailing neoclassical and neo-Gothic styles of the 19th century and the glass and steel high-rise structures of the 20th century. Adapted his buildings to the environment, using the colors, forms, and textures of nature to furnish the aesthetic as well as functional needs of the inhabitants.
