Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Buildings, Plans and Designs” is a famous architectural portfolio first published in 1910 in Berlin by the Wasmuth firm. It was later reprinted by Horizon Press in New York in 1963. This portfolio is significant because it played a crucial role in introducing Wright’s revolutionary architectural concepts to a European audience, influencing modern architecture worldwide. 2,600 copies were published by Horizon. The original Wasmuth Portfolio contained 100 lithographs depicting Wright’s early works, including residences and public buildings. The 1963 reprint by Horizon Press is a high-quality facsimile of the original portfolio. It includes Wright’s most notable early designs, such as the Robie House, Unity Temple, and the Larkin Building. This particular portfolio was ordered from Wilbert R. Hasbrouck, by my father, in 1963. The postmark is dated June 1965. The box, with the inside packaging spacers and onion skin, is original and still in excellent condition. The portfolio has been kept in the box since 1963. While taking the photos for this listing, the onion skin was accidentally torn and the outer protective sleeve of the portfolio developed a slight 1 tear in the crease of the fold. Otherwise, this item is in pristine condition. This portfolio is numbered 295B and signed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Fifty color plates, loose as issued, in original black cloth clamshell box with bone clasps. Housed in original numbered cardboard box. The title block on the cloth box is rubbed through in one spot (please see photo), else Fine. Of an edition limited to 500 copies, this is numbered A401. Near Fine / Cardboard Box Fine. The significance of Wright’s architectural theory is dramatically illustrated by the portfolio, underscoring a drift to technology tempered by his organic and humane tendencies. “Wright had an impact on American culture and global architecture of a magnitude that posterity has only begun to grasp” (American National Biography). The gorgeous plates, many publishing works by his underlings, and many published here for the first time, span Wright’s career, from his Prairie period to the utopian designs of Broadacre City. A second portfolio was published in 1980; a third in 1982.
