There are also 3 pages of handwritten notes by Davis identifying pictures on 3 rolls of film, plus a couple other related notes and cards. Davis has placed the pebble strategically on top of already-taken pictures of famous artists as well as Davis’s Pittsburgh circle of artists and friends and made a series of funny and charming photos that pre-figures later photographers’ similar Zelig-like projects. Morgan, Picasso, Balcomb Greene, Pittsburghers Helen & George Hunt, Augustus John, Pittsburghers Mary Shaw, Marion Graper and George Koren, Hans Hoffmann, Rodin, Sam Hood, Pittsburgher Elvira Peake, Max Ernst, Russell Twiggs, Chirico, Calder, Braque, Pittsburgher Arthur Bergholtz, Audrey Hepburn, Pittsburghers Chad and Peg Jensen, Jackson Pollock, Louise Pershing (called “Persh”), and others. Davis was a modernist from Pittsburgh. He was an original member of the modern art Outlines Gallery in downtown Pittsburgh, which was started by Betty Rockwell in 1941. In addition, he was a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, and a founding member of the Art and Crafts Center, Society of Sculptors, and the Abstract Group. Davis’s work was also exhibited at the first post-war survey of Abstract and Surrealist American art held at the Art Institute of Chicago in the winter of 1947-8.
