This volume addresses “A New Basic Problem” which Aperture publisher Minor White defines as a need for learning how to read or interpret photographs. ” Wilson Hicks’ article “Photographs and Public and Henry Holmes Smith’s essay are both written in response to White’s call for learning and interpreting photographs. Also included are Jules Aarons’ “Advice From a New York Fashion Photographer”, a portfolio of six black and white images and text by Wynn Bullock, a transcript of a speech made by F. Rank Lloyd Wright on “Press Photography” and reviews of several photography shows. Covers are illustrated with black and white images by Ruth Bernhard and Ansel Adams.
