RARE Boym Buildings of Disaster Souvenir Building: Frank Lloyd Wright Larkin Soap Company Building, Buffalo, NY. This is the only one Ive ever seen. In 1903 noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to build its headquarters, a five-story brick building that featured air conditioning, built-in desk furniture, and suspended toilet partitions and bowls, among many other features. It was demolished in 1950. Missing Monuments originally comprised ten buildings; additions were added annually. “Buildings of Disaster” is the Boyms most controversial and successful catalog item: a line of building replicas that have become symbols through association with catastrophe, tragedy or scandal. Each is a few inches high and made of bonded nickel, in editions of 500. Some are now in museum collections. The idea, was both an “alternative history of architecture” (buildings famous by way of emotional involvement, not aesthetics) and an examination of what souvenirs are all about. While the Boyms clearly anticipated a certain amount of controversy, they do not seem to have anticipated the series’ durability. But that can be explained in a straightforward way: market demand.
