The Japanese Print: An Interpretation. Horizon Press, New York / Tokyo, 1967. A A Near Fine book, absolutely clean and unmarked, very, very carefully read if that, no dust jacket as issued. There are a few tiny spots on the front and back as pictured. The graphics on the boards and spine remain beautiful as does the gilt lettering. The slip case is Very Good, it has some light cracking on edge and some sticker residue on the back as pictured. Thirty-two color plates, the last is an extended gate-fold (see photos). Wright, not shy with hyperbole, waxes rapturous when describing his own experience with the Japanese print: The print is more autobiographical than you can imagine. If Japanese prints were to be deducted from my education I don’t know what direction the whole may have taken. This is a like new book. I doubt it was ever opened or read.

Chicago: The Ralph Fletcher Seymour Co. First edition, first printing. Bound in publisher’s original tan paper-covered boards. Near Fine with light toning to spine, trivial rubbing to extremities, light soiling and several tiny spots, but on the whole a very nice example of this fragile book.

One of the rarest and most sought after books by Frank LLoyd Wright. I have owned this for many years but now find it is time to part with the book and put it in a good home. This is a very special publication, made of Fibrous Japanese paper endsheets. Printed on Japan vellum. First printing of the first edition, preceded by another printing which Wright disliked and destroyed. Depending on the reference, there were either thirty-five or fifty copies printed. This is a well cared for copy, see images as they are part of the description. This book offers an analysis of the print and the theories set forth in text can be read as a statement about Wrights approach to architecture. During his Oak Park years, Wright achieved in his buildings the qualities he admired most in the Japanese print: geometric abstraction, balance, a sense of repose, and above all, a simplicity attained by eliminating the inessential.
