This Frank Lloyd Wright Stained Glass vividly recreates one of Wright’s most popular designs. The design is one of a number of Liberty Magazine cover designs from 1926-27 that the editors reckoned to be too radical. Thus it was never used. In 1973 there was a fire in the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. This graphic was selected from the Frank Lloyd Wright Archive to be rendered in stained glass in the reconstructed foyer of the Biltmore – thus it was used posthumously so to speak – as Wright had died in 1959. The design was influenced by the Arizona based Saguaro cactus- The saguaro is an arborescent cactus species in the monotypic genus Carnegiea, which can grow to be over 40 feet tall. It is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, the Mexican State of Sonora, and the Whipple Mountains and Imperial County areas of California. The saguaro blossom is the state wildflower of Arizona. On this glass panel, enamel colors are individually applied to a single sheet of glass which is then kiln fired to permanently fuse the enamels to the glass. This wonderful example measures 11 3/4″ x 11″, including the aluminum frame. With two holes on top for attaching a chain for hanging. This Frank Lloyd Wright glass panel is officially licensed by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The affixed tag reads. Adapted from a design by Frank Lloyd Wright. Certified by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Please see all photos as they are part of the description. Note that there are two random scratches UNDER the rear glass section – which must have occurred during the manufacturing process of this piece – and being under the glass, it does not affect the piece in any way structurally. Please see last photo. This’Arizona Biltmore’ / Liberty magazine example is one of several different designs that have been produced of the same theme – and this design is clearly the most vibrant and most popular of all of Wright’s stained glass designs that can be had. Assembling the entire output of this design would be fascinating. The item “FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT Foundation Tag Stained Glass withVIBRANT SAGUARO COLOR ARRAY” is in sale since Saturday, June 1, 2019.
