My father knew Frank Lloyd Wright personally and worked with him on his pre-fabricated homes. My father gave me this brochure many decades ago. He was in the redwood business in the mid-1950s, working for Simpson Timber Company of Eureka, California. My grandfather was the President of Simpson Timber Company. My father met with Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago in 1955 and convinced him to use redwood battens in his pre-fabricated homes. Redwood, as you may know, is 6/7ths water and virtually fireproof. Around this time, my father also threw a cocktail party for Frank Lloyd Wright at the Chicago Club or the CAA, the Chicago Athletic Association. This party was documented in an issue of LOOK Magazine in the late 1950s. Eleven pre-fabricated houses in total were built. Offering in VERY GOOD CONDITION this oversize 8-page brochure on thick coated stock advertising three different FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT designed PRE-FABRICATED HOMES. Please see close-up pictures for details. What you see is what you get. Dimensions are approximately 9 1/2 inches x 12 1/2 inches. EXTREMELY RARE and ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND. By spring of 1956 Wright had final plans for three Usonian-type homes to be built exclusively by ME&A. Eleven homes in total were built. Nine examples of Prefab #1 were built. Two examples of Prefab #2 were built. No examples of Prefab #3 were ever built. The prefab package Erdman offered included all the major structural components, interior and exterior walls, floors, windows and doors, as well as cabinets and woodwork. Wright also intended to inspect each home after completion, and to apply his famous glazed red signature brick to the home if it had been completed as planned. Eugene Van Tamelen House – Madison, Wisconsin (1956). Arnold Jackson House “Skyview” – moved from Madison to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in 1985 (built 1957). Duncan House – moved from Lisle, Illinois to Polymath Park in 2002 (built 1957). Frank Iber House – Plover, Wisconsin (1957). Al Borah / Carl Post House – Barrington Hills, Illinois (1957). Catherine and William Cass House “The Crimson Beech” – Staten Island, New York (1959). Socrates Zaferiou House – Blauvelt, New York (built 1961). Joseph Mollica House – Bayside, Wisconsin (1958). Edward & Laura Jane LaFond House – St. Walter Rudin House – Madison, Wisconsin (1957). James McBean Residence – Rochester, Minnesota (1957). [ARCHITECTURE, FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, PRAIRIE STYLE DESIGN]. THE USONIAN HOUSE The Work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Solomon Guggenheim Museum. Oblong quarto (7.5 in x 10.0 in) Unpaginated 12 pp. Counting wraps Bound in photo illustrated wraps. A WHOLLY FINE AND FAULTLESS COPY. Staples tight and without stress; corners sharp and clean. Brochure is totally flat, no cupping rolled edges or buckling. No creases, dogears, stains, writing or other faults which would have normally befallen such an ephemeral item. This souvenir brochure features interior photos of the Usonian House built on the future site of the Guggenheim Museum which was Wrights first building built in New York City. Text authored by Wright with photo illustrations by Pedro Guerrero and Ezra Stoller. A fine gift idea for the fan of FLW architecture, an owner of a Usonian House or any Prairie Style influenced design. One would be hard pressed to imagine a finer example of this fragile and temporal item. A scarce if not rare survivor thus; very worthy of framing and display in an office, home study, museum or other architectural institution or business. Is a term usually referring to a group of approximately sixty middle-income family homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright beginning in 1936 with the Jacobs House. The “Usonian Homes” are typically small, single-story dwellings without a garage or much storage. They are often L-shaped to fit around a garden terrace on unusual and inexpensive sites. They are characterized by native materials; flat roofs and large cantilevered overhangs for passive solar heating and natural cooling; natural lighting with clerestory windows; and radiant-floor heating. A strong visual connection between the interior and exterior spaces is an important characteristic of all Usonian homes. The word carport was coined by Wright to describe an overhang for sheltering a parked vehicle. Variants of the Jacobs House design are still in existence today. The Usonian design is considered among the aesthetic origins of the ranch-style house popular in the American west of the 1950s. In 2013, Florida Southern College constructed the 13th Wright building on their campus according to plans that he created in 1939. The 1,700 sq. Building includes textile-block construction, colored glass in perforated concrete blocks, Wright photographs, a documentary film about the architect’s work at the school, and furniture designed by Wright. Named the “Usonian House, ” it was originally designed as one of twenty faculty housing units. The building is home to the Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center, a visitor center for guests visiting campus to see the collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. VERY High Quality Printing Very Hard To Find Jan. 6 1952 The Arizona Biltmore Hotel Brochure FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT Designer 15 Pages. For your consideration is this extremely unusual antique information/souvenir photo booklet from The Arizona Biltmore Hotel, which opened its doors in 1929 and still operates today. There is a stamped date of Jan 6, 1952 on the inside back cover and on a single paper of introduction. This piece is kind of a hard cover colored photo with a deco edge all around front and back. It measures about 6 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ and is 15 pages long. It’s chock full of information on the famous hotel, maps, on-site entertainments and luxury amenities- but the photos are really the remarkable feature! Great quality photos of daily life at the hotel include views of the luxurious rooms and villas, beautiful desert scenery, patrons playing golf and participating in the on-site rodeo, riding horses and swimming. The booklet itself has very little signs of wear. Over all inside pages are just about immaculate and binding is firm. I have not been able to find anything quite like this in my research – this is a great and very unusual collector’s find that is waiting to be part of your own collection! As always, thank you very much for looking. Please see all the pictures. They can be enlarged. Please Note: I may have other auctions going on with more Historic, Restaurant, Railroad, Steamship, Hotel, Airline, or Advertising China or Silverplate. Please take a look!
